After Xerxes’ recent post, which outlined the template he’d like to see put in place here at the site…I’ve altered the plan somewhat. While he is on the track with most of it, I’ve added a new segment to the site to make it more segmented. Friday is traditionally the day that new releases open in movie theaters across the land (or the land that I live in, known as Canada). Okay, sure, Star Wars films always opened on Wednesdays, but beyond that all others open on Fridays. Except for sneak previews, which open on Thursdays more often than not. So beyond those as well, everything else opens on Fridays. Correct if I’m wrong - but I’ve thought this through and done my usual thorough research. Thanks, Wikipedia. Today is the first installment of EffTD (Sort Of) At The Movies. Here I will review films that contain elements of EffTD and Eventualism (henceforth known as Eventualism 2.0 or E2) and answer the question “To see or not to see?” to give the best moviegoing experience for you, my faithful followers. Oh, and I often view them at home - usually using Netflix or iTunes so that I don’t have to get up and go anywhere. This makes it a pure E2 experience. The honor of the first film to be reviewed by yours truly is Chaos Theory, starring fellow Canadian Ryan Reynolds. (Incidentally, Mr. Reynolds just made Scarlett Johansson the luckiest woman alive - next to my wife, of course.) The plot of Chaos Theory is outlined as follows: “Frank Allen (Ryan Reynolds) is a professional speaker who lectures on time management, and his life is perfectly ordered and scheduled, down to the minute. When his wife (Emily Mortimer) sets his clock forward 10 minutes as a joke, his day is thrown off. When he ends up late for an out-of-town lecture, things go awry. A couple of miscommunications leads his wife to question his fidelity, and he ends up making a discovery that causes him to have his own doubts about his family life. Deciding that his strictly ordered life has done him little good, he begins to make multiple choice index cards, choosing one at random and doing what is written on the card.” - courtesy of Wikipedia I watched this film with great interest, as it is one of the few I’ve seen that actually features a character who lectures on one of the key elements of productivity and organization. It was interesting to see how a slight shift in his schedule had such an impact on his entire life, completely shattering everything he follows (and teaches). Ryan Reynolds has the chops to pull it off, and it is a grand departure from his Van Wilder character - a character who dabbles in EffTD with flair. It appears as if Reynolds has range - and his acting resume is neatly rounded with the addition of this starring turn. If only he was to play a superhero… The index cards Frank Allen employs are an interesting idea, and one has to wonder how things would turn out if such a strategy was to be employed in real life. I’ve decided to take it upon myself to do so for one day next week…and I’ll post my results a week from today. Should make for an interesting day - and an interesting read. I may even feature it on the podcast - but I’ll let the cards decide. By the way, if you have any ideas on what I should write as choices on my index cards, post it in the comments below and I’ll add your suggestions to the mix. All in all, Chaos Theory is a fine film…and a great film for EffTDers to learn from. Everything unfolds in Frank’s life in an eventual fashion, and his handling of it is something any budding Eventualist can learn from. Theoretically speaking, of course.
