With the world teetering on the brink of an economic crisis, there is a significant amount of focus on more people becoming poor over the course of the next while. It’s in the news. But with today being Blog Action Day, it is as if the founders of this prestigious day knew this was going to happen and planned it all along. All the signs are there. Here’s how the series of events went down (in my estimation, at least): 1. I received an email asking me to participate in Blog Action Day for 2008. Feeling a sense of pride and thinking that it meant that I would get to write “poorly” for a day, I accepted. 2. As October 15th approached, the world’s markets collapsed. Even my local farmers’ market tent collapsed. That’s how far the Blog Action Day reach was. It was at that point I realized what the email actually meant, especially since I could not find coronation grapes anywhere. 3. I received another email, this time a “reminder” that Blog Action Day was only 5 days away. This was not a gentle reminder, it had a sense of urgency…almost threat-like. 4. October 15h arrives. Time to write.
So, to keep both the threat of poverty and the Blog Action Day organization at bay, I’m going to the following - in the form of a list, but this one is in bullet-form: - I’ve set up a donation page here.
- While I’m not asking for money for myself, it’s going to the next most important people in the world…those who need it. Oh, and you’ll get a wristband for your efforts from me, if you’d like as well. And I know you’d like.
- To anyone who comments below, you are eligible for an autographed NHL hockey card, courtesy of me. I have many of these to give away…but you’ll need to leave me your email address so I can contact you for your other address that accepts mailman type of mail. Your comment needs to talk about the poor, or at least have the word “poor” in it.
In closing, while I preach EffTD and Eventualizm here at the site, this is one cause that has had the tag “eventually” attached to it for too long - and if something is immersed in “eventually” for too long it soon becomes “never” or “nothing.” But if you take the issue of poverty seriously, we can take steps to do “something” and rid the world of it “forever.” It will take a united effort from all EffTDers, GTDers and NPR contributors combined - and probably a few others. So give today, because in this case when you’re Effing The Dog - you’re doing something great.
