Why I Love Elections, West Coast Living and Minority Governments PDF Print

VoteToday is Decision Day in my home and native land, and all signs point towards another minority for the reigning Conservative Government.  Now I know many of you are wondering which political party I support, whether I'll be voting at all and who I'll be voting for if I do vote.  I'll answer both of those with an emphatic "yes."

Firstly, while I do bemoan the whole idea of getting up and going out to vote, I do take heart in the fact thatthe voting hours are long and drawn out (although not as long as the results broadcasts and not nearly as long as the campaigns themselves), so I can vote as I do everything else - eventually.  Until the day happens when I can vote either online (or better still, with the TiVo voting for me based on what television programming I enjoy), I will do my democratic privilege and go to the polling station.

Nextly, while it also my privilege to keep my political allegiances as secretive as Sarah Palin's credentials, I will share with you which party I support in the Canadian system.  I support all of them.  In fact, when I vote I mark each candidate with an "x" in the hopes that one day the electorate will simply give in and realize that all my votes should count (Sidenote: while I have flirted with the idea of ranking the candidates in my riding, I've since learned this has been considered an option in future elections and refuse to conform).  By voting in the manner that I do, I ensure that each candidate has an equal shot to win in my riding.  This is what is commonly referred to as "strategic voting" which is almost as strategic as the increasingly popular "not voting."  Remember, the methodology I promote works best in a political sense when our elected officials are locked in girdlock as they try to run the country - which is why all Canadian Eventualists prefer minority governments.  It is also why we like our Senate arrangement so much.

Finally, while I have to wait until the polls close in British Columbia before I can find out what is going on, that is preferred as far as Eventualizm goes.  Considering that exactly one second after the polls closed we found out that the Conservative Party had, in fact, won before our votes were even tallied, we still find out more eventually than any other part of the country what in the hell is actually going on.  This is called "actual eventualizm" or "the reason a lot of West Coasters don't vote" - and it is important ot note here that most of the ballots used to choose the winner before the West Coast finds out anything come from the West Coast.  Same with the pencils.

Incidentally, our election comes exactly one day after Thanksgiving.  Or maybe I meant contradictorily.

I'm not sure...and I'm sure not going to take it to Ottawa.  Then I'll never find out.
