THE EFFIN' 7: Nick Cernis of Put Things Off PDF Print
Wednesday, 23 July 2008

One of the newest segments here at Effing The Dog makes its print debut today.  The Effin' 7 are seven quick multiple-choice questions that I pose to various interviewees (or "Information Highwaymen/Webutantes" as I call them) for your reading pleasure.

For the first edition, I had the pleasure of corresponding with Nick Cernis of Put Things Off and the popular e-book Todoodlist (which you can buy here ).  He is a British fellow, so you will notice some references along those lines.  You may want to brush up on your knowledge of The Empire (not the Darth Vader one, but the less popular one) before continuing.

Effing The Dog Gets The "Lifehack Launch" PDF Print
Wednesday, 23 July 2008

While perusing The Information Highway, Xerxes came across a recent article by one of the productivity flagship sites, Lifehack.  This article, dubbed Readers Recommend: 15 More Productivity Blogs You Probably Never Heard Of, mentions our very own EffTD at #6!

(I emailed in protest that we weren't #1, and I was told that the blogs were listed in alphabetical order, and not ranked.  After carefully checking and cross-checking, this appears to be the case.)

All two of the staff here at EffTD would like to thank the fine folks at Lifehack for the kind words - and the calming picture listed along with the article.

Put What Where Now? PDF Print

Yesterday, we discussed how to organize yourself in an eventual fashion.  Today, I'm going to gently prod you into another phase of Effing The Dog:  where to capture all of your stuff.  The key thing to try to remember here is that you need to mix it up a little.  Try different things.  Try Things first, then switch to a Hipster PDA.  Then go with OmniFocus for a good long haul before quasi-abandoning it for iCal (that's what I call "The OmniBallDrop").  Again, I say try to remember because you'll have to not only try to remember it mentally in your head (as opposed to mentally elsewhere), or remembering which of the capture devices you actually wrote down this very thing you were supposed to remember.

One of the major components in the Effing The Dog system is working on organizing your tasks.  To clarify, I must insist you only work on organizing the tasks you wish to complete - not actually complete them.  At least not right away.  I have no doubt that you have piles and piles of things you need to work on.  If this, however, does not happen to be the case, I suggest you figure out a way to "let things pile up" for some time before tackling this project.  By doing so, you'll already be Effing The Dog in a small way.  A good way to ensure you can't help but let things pile up is to rent a combination of Star Wars movies and pro wrestling DVDs, and take them in with a copious amount of beer from one of those new "home kegs" you can get.  That should get you well on your way to not getting on your way to do anything right away.

There once was a knight who was dark;

On vigilante missions he would embark.

He drove a Batmobile;

His screen foil died - for real!

And his hero flick beat the pants off of Stark.
